Berkeley Park Neighborhood Association Goals for 2006
1) Traffic related issues
- Hold a series of community charrettes in order to plan streetscape and roadway
improvements for all neighborhood streets. Invite Clair Muller, Mike Dobbins,
Ed Ellis, and Susan Kidd to participate.
- Create and present to the City a detailed list of specific improvements
equipped with accurate drawings, measurements and budget information. This
package of projects will serve as a “shopping list” for implementation as
funding becomes available.
- Pursue the dedication of the Kroger entrance on Bellemeade as a public road
(possibly Muller street) and subsequent upgrades to its sidewalks and intersection
with Bellemeade.
2) Green Space within Berkeley Park
- Investigate public and private funding to purchase the empty lot at Forrest
and Antone.
- Abandon Forrest Way between Antone and Berkeley to add to park.
- Create a pedestrian link within the neighborhood to connect with the new
park.
- Work with the Atlanta Parks Department, ADA, and TPL to plan the boundaries
of a new “Waterworks Park” that will include the eastern reservoir and surrounding
land, the Public Works site on Northside Drive, and any privately held land
that can be acquired for the project.
3) Selig Enterprises Donation
- Create a list of options for use and have them approved by Scott Selig.
- Canvas the neighborhood to fairly choose an option.
- Implement the spending of the money.
4) Pedestrian Connectivity
- The creation of a contiguous sidewalk connection between Berkeley Park and
the Westside Village along Howell Mill (as described in the Blue Prints document
and previously endorsed by Clair Muller)
- The creation of a contiguous sidewalk connection between Berkeley Park and
Atlantic Station along Northside Drive (as described in the short term recommendations
of the Northside Drive corridor study)
- The creation of a new (8 foot, unobstructed) sidewalk on the East side of
Howell Mill along the improved roadway.
5) Code and Zoning violations
- Set up “block captain” system to help stay on top of violators.
- Draft letter to be distributed to violators in an effort to avoid City in
volvement.
- Explore options for eliminating inappropriately zoned lots (C2, C1, and
I1) inside the residential core of the neighborhood.
- Update the SPI-14 district to include requirements on commercially zoned
lots. In particular, these should include a wider buffered standard for sidewalks,
a fenestration requirement similar to QOL zoning, and an increased setback
requirement along neighborhood streets.
6) BPNA Membership and Newsletter Advertising
- Draft a letter to introduce BPNA businesses to the Association and welcome
involvement.
- Set up zones for volunteers to go door to door in reasonable volume.
- Educate the neighbors and the businesses about the importance of dues for
operating capital.
- Encourage neighbor patronage to Berkeley Park Businesses.
- Transform the newsletter into a profit making tool through the sale of advertising.
- Introduce a monthly column that focuses on the progress of this list and
the participation of our council member and other City officials.
